  1. 여행 계획[yeohaeng gyehoek]noun

    travel plan

여행 계획을 세웠어요.I made a travel plan.

💡 Memory tip: 여행 (travel) + 계획 (plan) = your travel plan. Think of "gyehoek" as your "game hook" -- the plan that hooks your whole trip together.

Pronunciation: 계획 is pronounced [계획] or often [계훽] in fast speech. The ㅎ in 획 is aspirated.

  2. 항공권[hanggonggwon]noun

    plane ticket / airline ticket

항공권을 온라인으로 예약했어요.I booked the plane ticket online.

💡 Memory tip: 항공 (aviation/air) + 권 (ticket/voucher) = an air ticket. "Hang-gong" sounds like "hang in the air" -- that's where planes fly!

Korean Travel Culture: From KTX to Jeju

Koreans are passionate travelers -- both domestically and internationally -- and understanding how they approach travel gives you insight into daily life and practical vocabulary.

-- 국내 여행 (Domestic Travel): Koreans love exploring their own country, especially on weekends and holidays. The compact size of South Korea means most destinations are reachable within a few hours. Popular domestic trips include 경주 (Gyeongju, the ancient capital), 부산 (Busan, beaches and seafood), 강릉 (Gangneung, east coast vibes), and of course 제주도.

-- KTX (Korea Train Express): The KTX is Korea's high-speed rail network, connecting Seoul to Busan in just 2.5 hours. Koreans frequently take KTX for weekend trips. Booking is done through the Korail app or website. 기차 여행 (train travel) is comfortable, affordable, and popular for couples and families.

-- 제주도 (Jeju Island): Jeju is Korea's number one domestic destination -- a volcanic island off the southern coast with stunning scenery, unique culture, and 한라산 (Hallasan, Korea's tallest mountain). It's so popular that Koreans joke it's harder to NOT have been to Jeju. No visa required for most nationalities, making it a popular short trip from other Asian countries too.

-- 네이버 지도 & 카카오맵 (Naver Map & Kakao Map): Forget Google Maps in Korea -- it doesn't work well there due to national security regulations on map data. Koreans use 네이버 지도 (Naver Map) or 카카오맵 (Kakao Map) for navigation, restaurant searches, transit routes, and travel planning. Download these before your trip!

-- 여행 방송 (Travel Shows): Korean TV is full of travel variety shows like "배틀트립" (Battle Trip) and "뭉쳐야 뜬다" (Where On Earth), where celebrities explore destinations. These shows heavily influence travel trends -- a restaurant featured on TV can see lines around the block the next day.

-- 찜질방 스테이 (Jjimjilbang Stays): Budget travelers (especially young Koreans) sometimes spend the night at a 찜질방 (Korean sauna/spa) instead of a hotel. For around 10,000-15,000 won, you get access to saunas, sleeping rooms, snacks, and entertainment. It's a uniquely Korean travel hack and cultural experience rolled into one.
